Elementary School Reopening Plans
-
We look forward to starting a new school year. Even though we start this school year in the midst of much uncertainty, our staff are dedicated to making this year the best experience possible for your children.
We know there are a lot of questions and we have compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions and answers below.
Please note that additional communication related specifically to Cohort D (fully remote students) will be communicated prior to the start of the school year, however much of the information outlined below apply to all cohorts.

- Unidirectional outside hallways; bi-directional inside hallways

Transportation
A reminder that any students who ride the bus must have a valid bus pass. Students will be given assigned seats a minimum of 4 feet apart from students who do not reside in their home.
Also, please practice social distancing at the bus stops.
Transportation routes will be posted to our website by the end of the day on Friday, September 11th. All students will require a current bus pass in order to receive transportation. No exceptions.
Bus passes have been mailed over the course of this week and anyone who completed the transportation registration should receive their pass in the mail no later than Monday, 9/14. If you do not receive a pass in the mail, you will have to transport your child to school until you complete the transportation registration. All students grades 7-12 are required to pay for transportation and payment must be processed prior to a bus pass being issued. Please contact the transportation office at 781-829-0832 with any questions.
-
Student Backpacks & School Supplies
Students will be carrying all their materials, (e.g. Chromebooks, lunches, water bottles, art supplies, binders, notebooks, pens/pencils etc.) so backpack weight will be something we want to remain mindful about.
Teachers are creating grade-based supply lists.
Students will need a labeled bag of art supplies (e.g. colored markers, colored pencils, scissors, etc.) to use across courses.
- Students will not be allowed to share materials
- We will have some new school supplies in the office for students who may need them.
-
Technology & Materials Pick-Up
We will be setting up a schedule for technology and material pick-up on September 10th, 11th, and 14th. Communication from each school will be sent out with a building-specific schedule for families to pick-up their devices and any necessary materials for remote or at home days.
Students will be expected to use a school-issued device while in school. We cannot support personal devices at school, nor can we push out important software on personal devices. Students are free to use their personal devices at home, although we strongly encourage them to use the school-issued device so our Technology Department can troubleshoot any issues.
If you cannot pick-up a school-issued device prior to the start of school, please reach out to the building principal. In the meantime, you can use a personal device while learning from home.
-
Classroom Procedures
Students desks are placed 6-feet apart.
- The classroom floors will be marked with a black sharpie for appropriate student desk placement so classrooms can be easily be reset, as needed, post-cleaning.
Classrooms only contain student desks & chairs (in rows), 1 teacher desk, LCD cart & 1 file cabinet.
Students may use a sanitizing wipe to clean & disinfect their desk and chair. They should also wash their hands as they leave the class.
-
Recess
2-3 classes would be at recess at one time, but in separate areas so as not to mix cohorts.
No shared equipment (i.e. basketball), but can play kickball or other activities that don’t require sharing materials.
No balls or other recess equipment should be brought from home
Playground equipment will be sterilized after every use
-
Outdoor Spaces
Teachers may go outside to teach or take a mask break with their classes anytime they want.
- Courtyards are especially reserved for these mask break times. Students have 2 scheduled mask breaks in addition to recess and lunch. Students may have more scheduled breaks.
There will be a 20’ x 30’ tent in the courtyard for outdoor classroom use.
Additional Outdoor areas will be scheduled
-
School Lunch Procedures
At the start of the day, students will place their cafeteria lunch order with their teacher online. Breakfast, lunch, snack will be delivered to each classroom. Lunches will be grade-based and occur in the classroom or outside. Students may remove masks and eat while seated at least 6 feet apart. Water bottles are recommended. Students cannot use their mouths at any of the water fountains.
Be mindful of Nut/Peanut Free classrooms when planning your child's lunches.
-
PPE & Sanitizing
Staff, like students, must wear face masks, except when eating (or during teacher announced mask breaks).
- No neck-gators or bandanas allowed for students or staff
- Masks must be worn when entering the building
Students should bring masks from home but the school will provide masks to students, as needed (e.g. lost/broken).
Each classroom has a univent that continually brings in fresh air. Windows will remain open as if feasible.
Classroom doors should remain closed, as this allows for optimal functioning.
Plexiglass barriers are being ordered for staff who will be working closely 1:1 with students (SLT, social workers, guidance, special education teachers, Kindergarten tables).
There will be sanitizing wipes in each room that will be used by students to disinfect their desks and chair at the end of each class and as needed.
Each custodian will have an atomizer, for disinfecting large areas (e.g., after student lunches, nightly after classrooms are cleaned and swept).
Also, each building will have a UV wand that can be used to disinfect other areas, as needed.
Each classroom has a sink, soap, and paper towels as well hand-sanitizer.
Students will wash their hands at the end of every experience
- After snacks, specialists, lunch, recess, etc
Additionally, hand sanitizer will be easily accessible everywhere throughout the building and contains the recommended level (70% isopropyl) of alcohol for disinfecting.
-
BES Arrival & Dismissal
This won’t change from past-practice, but we will change if needed
*No parents/others allowed in the building unless it’s an emergency
Front Entrance (Door 1)-Parent Drop Off and Pickup
-8:05 AM will be the earliest entry time (unless you have YMCA care)
-You may park in spaces out front
-Students should be masked when entering the building-escorted by teachers/staff.
Bus Drop Off-Building Rear (Door 9)
-Busses will drop off in a staggered manner
-
BES Late Arrivals and Early Dismissals
Parents should check-in from the front of the building/building speaker.
Early dismissal procedures or late drop off will be similar to our previous practice with the exception that parents will wait outside the main doors for their children.
- Administrators will complete the information needed for the dismissal book (time & reason).
-
BES Health Room Procedures
Nurse Haley will be conducting training on monitoring and reporting on student or staff health concerns.
Health triage area:
- Any student that goes to the nurse will wait in this triage in a different area for a health assessment.
- Students who have non-covid related sxs would be treated in the standard health room.
- Students who have potential covid related symptoms would be housed in the newly created health room next to the science room.
- Nurse Haley would contact the parents and facilitate pick up outside bus entrance doors in the rear of the building to minimize student’s movement within the building
- The bathroom closest to the new health room doors is being reserved for student(s) that may present with covid-related sxs. Disinfecting routines will be implemented after each student use.
-
BES Student Bathroom Procedures
Past practice remains--with social distancing in place
There will be 2 students allowed at a time in each bathroom.
- Students will have individual bathroom passes provided to them.
- Teachers will establish a sign-in/sign-out room procedure (e.g., clean/dirty pen containers)
- There will be 2 hooks on each bathroom door. The student will place his/her pass on one of the empty hooks.
- If there are no empty hooks, the student will wait for an opening on a social distancing marker.
-
NPES Drop-Off & Pick Up Procedures
Drop-off and pick-up procedures will look a little different this year. Please review the map below.
We have changed the directions of our roadways to reduce traffic and provide timely bus access.
There are designated locations to limit exposure and drop students off closer to their classrooms.
